Strike: Never a Solution!

Nepal is burning at present with the problems of electricity shortages, unemployment, poverty and so on. To add fuel to the fire, there are strikes and disturbances to those who have managed to find something to do.

It's obvious that the strikes hurts those who work but it has some less obvious implications that I am going to shed light on in this post.

1) Nothing is Free

While people declare strikes to get their demand fulfilled from the government, the real loss is not to the government. Again while it seems that those who impose strike might benefit if their demand is heard it isn't actually a gain for them.

Let's see an example. The government in the developed nations are able to provide a lot of services to their citizens for free (is it free?) because they collect a lot of tax from the people. The maximum rate of income tax that people in the US pay to their government is 33%. That's one third of their income. For example, if you earn Rs. 30000, you'll pay Rs. 10000 in tax only. This is the simple logic which most educated ones know and understand. However, what they don't know is that, even then the US government is running on a loss of more than 400 billion every year. Eventually the government will have to pay this large sum and this will be collected ultimately from the people. So, nothing is free in this world and don't demand anything for free. Getting services by paying tax is an expensive way of doing the same thing by oneself.

Work hard, pay for it and then get the thing that you want. Don't demand it with the government.

2) You won't be able to steal money by imposing a strike!

I call those who call for a strike, thieves because those who are not thieves earn their living by working hard. So, while these thieves may cherish at the success party after their "strikes" become successful, they are making mistakes in every possible way.

A little common sense for these thieves: You can only steal money if there is a source. You can't steal money from an empty pocket. If people don't get to work they won't have pocketful of money for you to steal. So, let them work and you'll get to steal more through bribery, under-the-table payment, etc.

3) I feel pity for those who waste their energy for no gains.

If you see the people involved in strikes then you can't help laughing. There are many people who are joining the strikes just for nothing. Absolutely nothing. Yes, they might feel that they are having fun but what kind of fun? Imagine dudes the fun that the people in developed country have after they work hard. Even if they get free services from government, that's not free and that's the outcome of the work of their fellow countrymen. So, people are helping each other there while you dudes are helping those "barking dogs" at the cost of the people who really work and contribute something to the society.

So, next time someone calls for an strike don't stand up freely for the "barking dogs". Stand up against them!

4) Enough is enough!

People hoped that the strike will bring development and worked hard only for a strike. People have supported the so-called revolution wholeheartedly in all the major strikes that have taken place in history of our country. However, their hope was baseless. They hoped that the government will provide them a lot of services freely after the strike and they won't have to work anymore.

Next time don't be fool to think so. Government provides services only if you work hard and pay a lot of tax. Government in itself is nothing and will do nothing. So, you can never change anything through revolution.

So, better change the culture and change the attitude. Think that nothing is free and everything in this world has a price because this is the view of economics as well.

The labor markets in China are cheap. That means people earn too few money for the work they contribute. But look at them now. They are about to take over the US. Hard work, (working more even for a small money) have ultimately paid them off handsomely in the long run. So, don't think that your hard work will go waste. If you doubt this then you aren't doing enough of the hard work that is necessary.

Therefore, hard work is almost the only way to prosperity. Don't try to bypass or take a shortcut to it through a strike or whatever. The history of our country has proved that the shortcuts and strikes don't work. So, work yourself.
