In my previous post I introduced you to a newly founded company Palm Agrotech & Bio-Energy Nepal (P) Ltd. Today I am going to discuss about its two main products: Aloe Vera and Stevia.
Aloe Vera at Palm Agrotech
Aloe Vera has been in use for centuries as a medicinal plant. It's used to soothe burns, stings of insects, etc. Aloe Vera juice is taken in liquid form as a medicine in Ayurveda. So, aloe has numerous benefits.
At Palm Agrotech, the officials claim that the Aloe Vera they sell is of the species Aloe Barbadensis Miller, which is considered the best species of Aloe. They too claim that this particular species has been imported to Nepal from a company in Malaysia. However, to my question of which company, no one had an answer. When it was asked to the founder, he denied to answer.
However, various sources on the internet and the company claim that Aloe Barbadensis Miller has various health benefits. This species contains 20 essentials irons, 20 out of 22 amino-acids required by our body, Vitamins, Carbose, enzymes, iron, calcium, sterols, Manganese, etc.
Have you heard the advertisements like 'sugar free biscuits', 'sugar free sugar', etc? If yes, then, they are nothing other than the product of 'stevia'. This plant has sweet leaves which can be used as food sweetener in place of sugar. Therefore, as suggested in the ads, they are safe for the diabetes and (high) pressure patients also. In Nepali this plant is termed as 'चिनी बिरुवा' or sugar plant.
This plant, as claimed by Palm Agrotech, is completely harmless to our health. It doesn't contain cholesterol and contains a very small amount of calories.
On the other hand, it is many times sweeter than the sugar. The sugar crystals extracted from Stevia are 300 times sweeter than sugar. Even the raw leaves are about 15 times sweeter than sugar. The company says that planting 5 stevia plants in a house with a medium sized nuclear family will fulfill the sugar demand of that house and they don't need to purchase sugar anymore.
For those of you who want to plant Aloe Vera or Stevia, either personally or commercially, you can make telephone contact or pay a visit to the company through the following address:
Palm Agrotech and Bio-Energy Nepal Pvt. Ltd.
Bharatpur Municipality 10, Chitwan, Nepal.
Phone No:- 056-520630
Best of luck to all the commercial farmers and prospective farmers of these two magnificent plants!

can aloevera and stevia be planted in kathmandu?
ReplyDeleteAloe Vera is a desert plant. Thus it can be planted in both the cold and warm places and in extreme conditions also. I guess you are willing to plant it in your home. That's a perfect idea, in my opinion, because I am also doing so the same!
ReplyDeleteTechnically speaking, both Aloe Vera and Setvia can be cultivated up to the altitude of 1500 meters. Since Kathmandu is at about 1400 meters you can safely plant both of these plants there. The safe temperature for Stevia is between 16 to 45 degree Celsius. However, this plant needs to be watered regularly, unlike Aloe Vera which barely needs water to survive but if you are planting it in a pot then you may have to water it occasionally because the mud in the pot dries quickly.
So, best of luck if you are planting these plants. I especially recommend planting Aloe Vera.
Can Stevia be cultivated in Terai? If it's possible, I'm very desirous .

Good Day !
ReplyDeleteHi am planning to do Alovera farming instead of going abroad for further Degree.
Which season is suitable for Aloevera farming and what would me Total cost to do medium scale farming.
Before doing any kind of agro business, always make sure that your climate is suitable.
ReplyDeleteFor planting aloe vera, Ashar and shrawan are the best months. In other words, monsoon season is suitable. Total cost would be around 8-10 lakhs for planting 20,000 plants. It will cover one third of a hectare of land (which is equivalent to 10 katha, or around 6 ropanies).
However, if you don't mind, I would like to suggest you to do silk farming by doing some research first. That would provide better return and would be a safer business in the context of Chitwan or Terai region.
I hope you got your answer. My best of luck to you.
In Nuwakot district, I think it might not be that suitable. Please contact the office of Palm Agrotech at

I want to do stevia farming professionally in Bhaktapur. Will you give me some suggestions?
ReplyDeletepuspedro@hotmail.com is my email address.
I've my own field in Dolakha District. The altitude is about 2200 metre. Can I cultivate the Setvia plant in that field ?
ReplyDeleteStevia can be safely planted at an altitude of 1500 meters. However, beyond that altitude it is not recommended to plant Stevia commercially. Even if the plant survived it might not be able to grow well which might ultimately reduce the output.
ReplyDeletePlease contact the company's address to discuss more on this. However, at that altitude I suggest you to seek for a different business. You can plant medicinal plants, fruits, flowers, and so on. Whatever, you do please first make sure that you can sell your product.
Bhaktapur lies at an altitude of around 1401 metres, so it is suitable to plant stevia there. I suggest you to visit the office of Palm Agrotech at Mid- Baneshwor, Kathmandu-34, Kathmandu Nepal.

hi i am from jhapa. i want stevia farming at one heactor land. can u gig me any idiea about this
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea. Stevia requires a lot of watering (irrigation). So, if you can manage water, I would suggest you to do it. Producing stevia is relatively not so complex. You can make a powder by picking up its leaves, drying them in a shady place (do not place the leaves in direct sunlight) and then grinding (crushing) them into powder form.

I don't know the taste of Jethimadhu. So, I can't describe exactly. However, stevia is not totally sweet in its unrefined form. It tastes like sugar but slightly different as if there is something else mixed up in the taste.
