WHO Evaluates Aloe Vera a.k.a. Aloe Barbadensis Mill

Because of the voluminous controversies regarding the usage and benefits of Aloe Vera, also known as Aloe Barbadensis Mill, including many other plants, World Health Organization (WHO) has conducted research on many such plants to provide an authorized, trusted and reliable source of reference for the consumers.

Needless to say, the data assembled by WHO is very technical, full of documentation and citation, here and there. If you don’t even know these words then don’t worry. For the common users like you and many others, it is difficult to interpret information from such source. Moreover the report is too long and contains information on many other plants which may not be your matter of interest here. So, in this article I’ll summarize the findings of the research by the WHO in a simple and concise manner. (If you are interested to read the full report, you can find it here.)

Findings of the report

The report discourages the use of Aloe Vera in most of the cases where people have made claims regarding the healing (therapeutic) effects of Aloe Vera. It’s because there is not a sufficient clinical evidence to prove these cases. So, I would recommend you to not use it in critical cases without being confident that the plant will be helpful.

One more fact I would like to state here is that, Aloe’s negative effects on a healthy body are rare. In any case, you can confidently use it if you fall under normal to healthy people’s range given that you are using it only temporarily and occasionally. This is because I myself have used it on various occasions without any side effects. However, one thing you should note is that smoking and alcohol taken only a few times are also not seriously harmful; at least not to the extent to cause lung or liver cancer. Also another notable thing here is that our body gradually gets adapted to any kind of abnormal situation. If you continuously start smoking then your body will get adapted to it. That’s why you have to increase doses time and again!
The above paragraph is meant to state that occasional uses aren’t harmful within the given limits for a normal person.

However, if you are making a highly sensitive decision, regarding the use of Aloe Vera then you have to be careful. By sensitive decision I mean the decision of commencing or halting the use of Aloe Vera by the persons suffering from severe illness. It is not recommended to use Aloe on the occasions when there is no concrete evidence that it will be beneficial to a patient.
Apart from the above suggestion, you should note that Aloe is not proved to be useful for certain illnesses do not, in any way, mean that it has been proved to be harmful. Either is yet to be proved for many cases.

Now, at this point, it would be relevant to introduce you with the two different styles of Aloe Vera usage: Aloe Juice and Aloe Vera Gel.

Aloe Juice is the solidified juice originating in the cells of the pericycle and adjacent leaf parenchyma, and flowing spontaneously from the cut leaf, allowed to dry with or without the aid of heat.

However, Aloe Vera Gel is the colourless mucilaginous gel obtained from the parenchymatous cells in the leaves of Aloe Vera. This is taken fresh (not dried) generally.

It is, however, quite important for you to distinguish between these two products of Aloe Vera. Since these two things are totally different each of them has its own preparation style, own clinical uses, and precautions. Therefore, usefulness and effectiveness of each of them will be analyzed fully in separate articles.
