Asparagus (Kurilo): Its utility and importance

Famous worldwide, with the name of Asparagus, Kurilo (it is called ‘Kurilo’ in Nepali and for my convenience I will use that name, my apology to the foreign readers, throughout this post) is not a new plant in Nepal. It is a subtropical plant that can be found easily in the forests of the Hilly and Terai regions of Nepal. Our fathers and grandfathers generations were well aware about the benefits and utility of Kurilo. They used to collect the shoots of Kurilos for consuming them as vegetable from the forests. (I am jealous that they didn’t even have to cultivate and grow it in their farms!) Similarly, they used its root as a medicine notably for animals like cows and buffaloes. Therefore, it is a popular plant for it great nutritional and medicinal value.

Kurilo as a Vegetable

Young kurilo shoots can be used to prepare vegetable. The vegetable of kurilo is very tasty, according to the claim of those who have eaten. However, it is not only tasty but quite nutritional as well. That is the justification of its high selling price in the market. The foreign researches also indicate its supreme nutritional value. Therefore, since it is good for our health it is important for us to consume it, at least occasionally.

Kurilo as a Medicine

While the shoot is used as a vegetable, the root of kurilo can be used as medicine for animals. However, I am personally quite unaware about its other medicinal applications. Therefore, it is a plant which has a good potential.

Its roots as well as shoots are both useful. Therefore, kurilo is a highly valuable plant. Considering its various values, I had brought home about 10 kurilo plants last year from the community forest, in Chitwan National Park, near my house. I had planted them in my kitchen-garden along with aloe veras. Initially, some plants seemed to have been died. However, when I left them untouched and watered them, being optimistic, all 10 plants survived finally. The plants which seemed to have died gave rise to new shoots a few weeks after.

Therefore, this plant has proven to be a safe plant to be planted. This year, I am considering planting them in a considerably large scale. If that doesn't become possible, then I will at least plant enough plants so as to be able to eat vegetables of kurilo shoots.

  2. You can order for them at district forest office (जिल्ला वन कार्यालय). They can provide you the plants for free. If they are available then you can get them right away. Otherwise, you might have to wait for a year.

Alternately, you can contact district agriculture office (जिल्ला कर्षि कार्यालय). There you might get necessary training, information about where it is available and so on. Also, you can get government grant (subsidy) if you are planning to do the business in a large scale.

Please do extensive research before starting the business. Learn which species plant will be better, whether there is a chance of catching a disease or not, and so on.

    Wish you all the best!
